I lost my investment to ignorance; now I make money from people’s businesses —Joy Akinlolu, CEO, Unique CEO
DONALD Foster once said: “No one who cannot rejoice in the discovery of his own mistakes deserves to be called a scholar.”
The Chief Executive Officer of Unique CEO, Mr Joy Akinlolu, did not only rejoice in the discovery of his own mistakes, but he also turned his mistakes into an informative and helpful message to many others, who are willing to learn from other people’s mistakes and achieve enviable success in their businesses and financial endeavours.
Akinlolu, a Guidance and Counselling graduate of the Lagos State University (LASU), who lost his eight-year-old school business, explained that: “It was really painful running a successful business and losing it when you taught you had it all. But it is now more exciting learning and earning from the mistake.
“My school business crumbled, like a dream. But I did not allow the failure to go into my mind like many other entrepreneurs who allowed business failures to overwhelm and discourage them.
I went back to the drawing board, retraced my steps to discover where I missed the track, learnt from the mistakes, charted a way forward, and turned the mistakes into useful messages to many other business owners. This in turns earns me more than I was realising from the business before it crumbled.
“My school business collapsed from what I called Be Your Own Boss Syndrome (BYOBS), which many businesses and business owners suffer from. Most of small businesses today are not business, but mere jobs, because they are not serving the owners, rather, the owners serve the job with their lives.
“Now, I am not only making cool money and enjoying peace of mind running my businesses as they are supposed to, but I also make unimaginable income teaching and helping others manage their businesses profitably, saving them from collapse and creating a platform that will make them outlive them. Their testimonies give me more fulfilment.”
HOW TO MAKE MILLIONS FROM PEOPLE'S BUSINESSSUCCESS in business is determined by how one overcomes the challenges in such a business and ensures that the business outlives one. A good number of entrepreneurs dream this, but find it difficult to achieve, as a result of laxity in business management. Many have lost their investments, while many businesses die with their owners.
To ensure the survival of their business interests, many entrepreneurs seek the services of individuals who are skilful in business consultancy and personal coach, helping business owners meet up with the demand of marketing, selling, and providing services that could grow the business.

Who can do the business?
If you are thinking of starting a management consulting business, you need to have the essential skills that are required to render advice to a company regarding problem resolutions, business reorganisation, filling in a temporary vacancy, or structuring a start-up venture.
The most important requirement for becoming a management consultant is strong communications skills, problem-solving capabilities, managerial skills, leadership skills, among other requirements. You also need to be well versed in business methodologies and terminologies, and solving internal and external business problems with management skills and techniques.
When it comes to management consulting, the services and responsibilities differ according to the focus and expertise of the consultant as well as the requirements of the client.

Start-up cost
Capital is not a threat for whoever wants to venture into the business. You can start with just a pen, paper and your personality. That does not undermine the place of capital in every business, as having a good capital will help a great deal. And no amount is too big for the business, depending on the scale you want to run it.
Then develop an online platform. The cheapest way for people to start learning about who you are, and what you do is to have a Facebook page, blog or website. Start by registering your online platform in your own name (e.g yourfullname.com) if you want to have a consulting business based around you. If you are looking to potential grow a larger consulting company, you may decide to name your company something that captures people’s attention or relates to the services you’re offering. Your platform should dictate your services, testimonials, case studies, contact information, and media mentions. You can also integrate a blog component, where you can write about trends, research, big ideas and industry insights. You will also want to use social networks, including Google+, Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter, in order to provide value and solicit new business.

Do free work in exchange for a case study:
This is because every new lead will ask you about your previous clients. I will advise you do some free consulting for a friend, family member or someone else. This way, you can wrap up your client engagement into a case study, promote it on your online platform, put it in your sales sheet, and they can refer your new business if they like what you’ve done for them. Don’t cringe at the fact that you are doing unpaid work. Instead, think of it as an investment that will help jump-start your business and something you can leverage for years to come.

Connect with new people:
Just having raw skills isn’t enough to start any type of business. You need to constantly put yourself out there and connect with new people daily. Go to networking events, meet-up groups, conferences, and use your social network channels to stimulate interest in your new business. The more you get out there, the more clients you’ll have and the more people can spread positive word-of-mouth about you. Avoid networking at your own peril!

Partner with others:
If you see successful businesses that are relevant to your consulting company, it might be a good idea to partner with them. If they aren’t offering your services as part of their portfolio, but their customers could benefit from them, then you should reach out to them. They might be able to build you into their portfolio and outsource your services, which will help you build your client list and give you revenue.

Promote yourself on freelance websites:
There are many freelance websites where you can promote your services for free, including www.freelancer.com, www.guru.com, and www.elance.com. You are competing against other consultants for projects on these sites, but it can help generate new leads.

Learning
Learning the basics in the business is continuous, and may come from your mistakes or mistakes of the people around you or the ones you have read about. Any form of formal education on it will be a huge advantage. You should also endeavour to read as many books you can on business and personal finance management, because you cannot give what you don’t have. And you expertise in the business remains the yardstick for what you earn from the business.

Planning and research
Do as much research about different types of businesses, their likely challenges and how to solve them, their prospects and how to skyrocket the prospect even in a stiff economy. To start with, you need to be very clear on the area in which you want to specialise. Specialise in a niche and stick to it.

Costs and potential earnings
Your expertise matters, as it will endear many business owner, small and big, to you. It will propel a client to recommend you to another client, thereby determining how much you earn for the services you render. While the value you placed on your services will also determine how much you charge your clients. You can earn as little as N50,000 and as much as N1million and above on a project per time. You charges may be monthly, yearly, or on a particular business you anchor.
